BIOGRAPHY:

Umamaheswaran Gurusamy, is a postdoctoral Fellow in the Division of Oncology and Surgery at the Departmenof Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Linköping University, Sweden. His work is centered on the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways of colorectal cancer. Dr. Umamaheswaran earned his MSc in Biotechnology from Bharathidasan University and a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Madras before completing a PhD in Pharmacology with specialization in Cancer Genomics and Pharmacogenomics at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). His doctoral studies focused on the genetic underpinnings of letrozole variability in postmenopausal breast cancer. For this work, he was awarded the best PhD thesis award and has also received various prestigious International awards for his research accomplishments. Prior to enrolling in the PhD program, he commenced his research career as a Junior Research Fellow in the Department of Pharmacology at JIPMER, where he pursued research investigating the genetics of essential hypertension. He then joined as Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Advanced Research in Pharmacogenomics and carried out population-based pharmacogenomics, and molecular epidemiological studies that estimated the disease risk of breast cancer, stroke, myocardial infarction, schizophrenia and asthma.

Umamaheswaran Gurusamy also documented the normative frequency of genes encoding clinically important drug metabolizing, drug target, and drug transporter proteins and determined their efficacy as well as the toxicity profiles. He is author or co-author of over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and a book chapter in the broad areas of pharmacogenetics and genomics. He also serves as a regular reviewer of numerous journals, including The Pharmacogenomics Journal, Biochemical Genetics, Journal of Diabetes, Drug Metabolism and Personalized Medicine, European Journal of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics, and Endocrine Research.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Umamaheswaran Gurusamy research interests include Pharmacogenetics and Genomics,  Cancer Genomics and Epigenomics, Genetic Epidemiology, Population Genetics, and Personalized Medicine
