Biography

Dr. Mustafa Yavuz is a Professor at the University of Waterloo and the director of the Nano/Micro-Systems Research Laboratory at the University Waterloo, which has been supported by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) since 2005. He received his PhD degrees in materials engineering and applied physics from the University of Wollongong, Australia. He worked at the Institute for Materials Research (IMR), Tohoku University in Japan; Accelerator Technology Corp, Bryan, Texas; and the Texas A&M University, where he was one of the founding members of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Materials Science and Engineering Program.

Dr. Mustafa Yavuz received British Council Partnerships for Research Excellence Award in 1997, the Pi-Tau-Sigma, US National Mechanical Engineering Honor Society Award in 2003, and the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Fellowship in 2006. He was cited as one of the most prominent nano-researchers in Canada by the Ontario Provincial Government, and invited by the Canadian Ambassador for Japan to promote Canadian nanotechnology research in Japan in 2007.

Dr. Mustafa Yavuz’s research area is micro and nanoscale materials design, fabrication and characterization, in four key applications areas: a. Design, fabrication and characterization of high temperature superconducting materials for SQUID sensors for biomedical application; and Qubits for quantum information storage; b. Design, fabrication and characterization of high precision nano-building-blocks via e-beam lithography and nano-imprinting; c. Micro- and nanoscale joining of nano-building-blocks for micro and nano-electronics, and d. Packaging and reliability of nano- and micro-electro-mechanical system devices.
